About

Also known as: Ophlin Russell

Sister Nancy, born Ophlin Russell in Kingston, Jamaica, holds a genuine piece of music history as the first female dancehall DJ and the first woman to perform at Reggae Sunsplash. Her signature track "Bam Bam" has taken on a life far beyond its original release, becoming one of the most sampled songs across genres and earning the tag of a reggae anthem from the BBC. Her debut album One Two came out in 1982, and her rolling vocal style, culturally conscious lyrics and expressive delivery owe a clear debt to her brother Brigadier Jerry, though she carved out her own unmistakable presence in the process. After relocating to New Jersey in 1996 and spending years working in banking, she returned to performing and released Sister Nancy Meets Fireproof in 2007. By 2016 she had left the banking world behind entirely to focus on music. She collaborated with Thievery Corporation on "Originality" and in 2024 became the subject of a full documentary, Bam Bam: The Sister Nancy Story, a fitting tribute to someone who paved the way for every female voice that followed in dancehall.
