About
Also known as: Jabulani Hadebe
Sjava, born Jabulani Hadebe, is one of South Africa's most compelling voices in afropop and afro soul, weaving maskandi traditions into a sound that pulls from hip hop and contemporary R&B. His debut album Isina Muva landed in 2016 with a title drawn from a Zulu idiom meaning "late bloomer", and it earned him a Best Produced Album win at the South African Music Awards. He followed it up with the EP Umphako and the critically praised Umqhele in 2018, the year he also picked up a BET Award for Best New International Act. His profile got a serious international boost when he appeared on the Black Panther soundtrack, curated by Kendrick Lamar. Since parting ways with Ambitiouz Entertainment in 2020, Sjava co founded 1020 Cartel and has kept his momentum going. His 2023 album Isibuko debuted at number one and went Platinum in South Africa, while the joint album Ukhamba with Big Zulu, under the name Inkabi Zezwe, produced the triple Platinum hit "Umbayimbayi". Most recently he put out a live EP called Inkanyezi in early 2025.
