Skinny Hightower is an American smooth jazz pianist who turned heads when his 2020 album Blue Moon landed at number 14 on the Smooth Jazz Year End Top 100 Album Chart. The singles pulled from that record were no afterthought either: "Bittersweet" climbed to sixth on the Billboard Year End Smooth Jazz Airplay Songs chart, and both "Blue Moon" and "Now or Never" hit number one on the Smooth Jazz Airplay Billboard charts. "Taboo" followed suit, also reaching the top spot, making Hightower one of the more consistent chart performers in the genre. By the end of 2021 he ranked seventh on the Billboard Year End Smooth Jazz Airplay Artists list. The backstory behind his name is worth knowing. When fellow soldiers in the U.S. Army found out he was a jazz musician, they started calling him a skinny version of Mr. Hightower from the 1996 sitcom The Steve Harvey Show, and the nickname stuck. He recorded his debut album Cloud Nine while still serving, four years into a five year Army contract that also included a deployment to Afghanistan.
