Smashing Satellites formed out of a restless creative energy when Sal Costa, former lead guitarist of My Darkest Days, decided to strike out on his own after years of arena tours and two successful albums with that band. He took his song ideas to Los Angeles, worked with producer Bob Marlette, and experimented with everything from live trumpet players to 40 different guitars and vintage keyboards before heading back to Toronto to pull together a live lineup. The band released their debut EP in 2014 and followed it with the full album SonicAluzion in 2015, which included the single "Waterfall" that cracked the Billboard Top 50 Alternative chart. Their biggest moment came with the 2016 single "Gamblin' Man", which hit number 38 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Costa called it a day in late 2017, but still put out the White Elephant EP as a parting gift to fans.
