Smino, born Christopher Smith Jr. in St. Louis, has carved out a genuinely distinctive lane in hip hop and alternative R&B, blending melodic singing with fluid rap delivery in a way that feels effortless but clearly isn't. His debut album blkswn landed in 2017 to serious critical praise, and he chose March 14 as the release date deliberately because 314 is the St. Louis area code. That kind of detail tells you a lot about how intentional he is. He followed blkswn with NØIR in 2018 and Luv 4 Rent in 2022, building a catalog that keeps growing in ambition. He also runs with a tight creative circle, the collective Zero Fatigue, and holds a spot in the supergroup Ghetto Sage alongside Saba and Noname. His fourth studio album, Maybe in Nirvana, arrived in late 2024, showing no signs of slowing down.
