Smoove & Turrell have carved out their own lane with what they call "Northern Funk", a blend of funk, soul, northern soul, hip hop and electronica that sounds exactly as gritty and warm as you'd expect from a Gateshead group. The duo at the core is producer Jonathan "Smoove" Scott Watson and singer/songwriter John Turrell, backed by a full live band. Their first release, a 500 copy limited 7" that ended up fetching £166 on eBay, set the tone: underground heat building into something bigger. DJ Craig Charles was an early champion, and singles from their debut Antique Soul landed twice on BBC Radio 2's Record of the Week and got playlisted on 6 Music. By their second album Eccentric Audio, "Slow Down" hit number one on the iTunes Soul chart and "Hard Work" turned up in a Rust Oleum TV ad and earned a coveted KCRW Today's Top Tune spot in Los Angeles. They've since released seven studio albums in total, all on Jalapeno Records, with the most recent being Red Ellen in 2023. Along the way they've shared stages with Nile Rodgers and Chic and played Ibiza, all while keeping their sound rooted in the North East.
