About
Toronto's Smoulder deal in epic doom metal with a very specific obsession: the sword and sorcery fiction of authors like Michael Moorcock, whose Eternal Champion mythos runs through much of their music. Moorcock himself even showed up to deliver spoken word vocals on their track "Victims of Fate", which tells you a lot about how seriously the band takes its source material. They name Manilla Road, Candlemass, and early Blind Guardian among their touchstones, and critics have backed that up with similar comparisons. They broke out with a 2018 demo tape that sold out 150 copies fast enough to warrant a 300 run vinyl pressing, which also sold out. That momentum landed them a slot at Germany's Hammer of Doom festival and a deal with Cruz del Sur Records. Their debut full length came out in 2019, followed by the EP Dream Quest Ends in 2020. Their second album, Violent Creed of Vengeance from 2023, takes a darker thematic turn, confronting misogyny and rape culture head on.
