Sneaker Pimps took their name from a Beastie Boys article about a man hired to track down rare classic sneakers, which tells you something about the kind of detail obsessed cool they were going for. Formed in Hartlepool in 1994 by electronic musician Liam Howe and guitarist Chris Corner, they broke through with their debut album Becoming X in 1996, which sold over a million copies on the back of singles like '6 Underground' and 'Spin Spin Sugar'. Their sound sits squarely in the downtempo and trip hop world, with influences ranging from Portishead and Massive Attack to Kraftwerk. After parting ways with original vocalist Kelli Ali, Corner stepped up to lead vocals for the darker, more industrial follow ups Splinter and Bloodsport. The band went quiet for years while Corner ran his solo project IAMX, but Howe and Corner revived Sneaker Pimps in 2016. In 2021 they released a new album, Squaring the Circle, recorded between Pioneertown, California and London, with vocals shared between Corner and featured artist Simonne Jones.
