About
Sofia's Trip is a live music project from Lonelinoise, built around the bassoon works of Sofia Gubaidulina. Bassoonist Thomas Dulfer set out to make that repertoire his own, pulling it away from the classical concert hall and shaping it into something closer to a journey. Gubaidulina's pieces, which are earthy, confronting and rooted in the raw and physical, sit alongside new music by composer Soheil Shayesteh. Shayesteh draws on trance and electronic influences, folk music and Western contemporary composition, and his writing reaches upward toward something more transcendent. He plays kamancheh, while Dulfer switches between bassoon and duduk. The programme alternates the two composers, with Shayesteh's Pendār pieces adding electronics and strings, so the whole thing moves from the earthly to the heavenly. Gubaidulina's Concerto for Bassoon and Low Strings is part of the mix.
