About
Sonico Ensemble is a five piece Belgian group devoted to the music of Eduardo Rovira (1925 to 1980), a composer who spent his career pushing back against the idea that classical music sits above tango. Rovira's answer to that prejudice was straightforward: he blended the two traditions together, and his work sits at a genuinely unusual crossroads in Latin American music history. The ensemble's programme "A celebration of the unknown" marks the centenary of Rovira's birth and treats his music as both a discovery for newcomers and a pleasure of recognition for listeners who already know their tango. The five members cover bandoneón, guitar, violin, piano and double bass, giving the group a sound that is rooted in the classic tango ensemble format while leaving room for the classical textures that defined Rovira's own vision.
