Eric Clapton once called Sonny Landreth one of the most advanced guitarists in the world and one of the most under appreciated, and honestly, that sums it up pretty well. The Louisiana bluesman has built his reputation around a slide guitar technique that goes well beyond the standard approach: he wears the slide on his little finger, freeing up the rest of his hand to fret notes and chord fragments behind it, all while his right hand taps, slaps, and picks with a custom thumb pick hybrid. The result is something that sounds like two guitarists at once. Known as the King of Slydeco for his zydeco soaked blues, Landreth has recorded with Mark Knopfler, Little Feat, John Hiatt, and Jimmy Buffett, among many others. His solo albums have repeatedly topped the Billboard Blues Chart, with records like The Road We're On and From the Reach both hitting number one. He has been a regular at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival and appeared on HBO's Treme, and his most recent studio album Blacktop Run came out in 2020.
