About

Also known as: SSQ

Few string quartets can claim they played at a presidential inauguration, but the Soweto String Quartet did exactly that when Nelson Mandela took office, and he liked them so much he started recommending them for other engagements. Based in Soweto, Johannesburg, the group of Reuben, Sandile and Thami Khemese alongside Makhosini Mnguni blends classical string playing with the dance rhythms of Kwela, the syncopated guitars of Mbaqanga and the swaying feel of African jazz. It is a genuinely distinct sound. Going fully professional in 1992, they have put out a varied catalogue that stretches from their 1994 debut Zebra Crossing, which cracked the Australian ARIA Charts at number 16, to gospel, Afrikaans hits and Christmas records. Renaissance also made the ARIA Charts, peaking at number 29. The group has always operated independently, with no affiliation to any organisation since they started out.
