About
Based in Chicago, Sparklemami makes music that pulls from a striking range of influences: Brazilian jazz from the 1970s, traditional Mexican boleros, and the playful vocal style of Indian singer Runa Laila. Her sound weaves together fluid vocal runs, warm saxophone improvisations, and bright beats, often switching between Spanish and English within the same song. A background in visual art shapes how she approaches live performance, with music growing organically out of visual improvisation and graphic scores, giving her shows an elusive, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Her debut album 'In This Body' sits at the centre of her work so far, rooted in vulnerability, community, and working through grief. Improvisation is a genuine driving force for her rather than a stylistic flourish, and that spontaneity comes through whether she is recording or performing live.
