About
Also known as: Square Pusher, Stereotype, スクエアプッシャー
Squarepusher is the project of Tom Jenkinson, an English electronic musician and bassist whose sound refuses to sit still. His recordings blend ferociously complex drum programming, live bass playing, and digital signal processing into something that crosses drum and bass, IDM, jazz fusion, and glitch without ever settling into a formula. The debut album Feed Me Weird Things came about after Aphex Twin heard a DAT of forty of Jenkinson's tracks and hand picked twelve of them for his Rephlex label in 1996. Jenkinson then signed a five album deal with Warp Records, the label he has called home ever since. Over the years he has pushed his sound into increasingly abstract territory, with Go Plastic from 2001 often cited as a high water mark for his "dark psychedelia" approach to drum and bass. He also fronts the live band Shobaleader One, which takes his material into full band performance. More recently, the track Terminal Slam showed he still has an appetite for dense, aggressive electronics.
