About
Squirrel Nut Zippers built their reputation by blending Delta blues, gypsy jazz, klezmer, and 1930s swing into something that didn't fit neatly into any one box. The Chapel Hill band became one of the standout acts of the 1990s swing revival, largely on the strength of the platinum selling album Hot and the single "Hell", a calypso tinged track written by Tom Maxwell. They played the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, performed at President Clinton's second inaugural ball, and turned up on everything from The Tonight Show to Prairie Home Companion. After going quiet in the early 2000s, the band has had more than one life since. Jimbo Mathus and drummer Chris Phillips relaunched them in 2016 with a New Orleans flavoured lineup, and the group released Beasts of Burgundy in 2018, their first proper studio album in nearly two decades. Their music has shown up in 25 films and counting, and they have kept releasing material, including the 2020 album Lost Songs of Doc Souchon.
