About
Also known as: Saint Germain, St Germain-en-Laye, St. Germain, St. Germaine, St.Germain
Ludovic Navarre makes music under the name St Germain, blending house, acid jazz and nu jazz into something that sits in its own comfortable pocket. His 2000 album Tourist, made for the legendary Blue Note label, sold four million copies worldwide and introduced him to American audiences, while his earlier album Boulevard had already gone platinum and been named album of the year by Mixmag back in 1995. After a long quiet spell, St Germain came back in 2015 with a self titled album that took a sharp new direction. Recorded with African musicians, it weaves together traditional Malian instruments like kora, balafon and ngoni with electric guitars, pianos, saxophones and electronic loops. The lead single Real Blues drops the voice of Lightnin' Hopkins over fierce, percussive beats, which gives a good sense of how far the record roams from his deep house roots.
