St. Lucia is the project of Jean Philip Grobler, a South African musician who traded Johannesburg for Brooklyn and eventually settled in Konstanz, Germany. His sound pulls heavily from 1980s influences, think Fleetwood Mac's Tango in the Night and Phil Collins, filtered through modern alternative dance production. Six studio albums in, from the debut When the Night in 2013 through to Utopia in 2022 and the two part Fata Morgana releases in 2025, Grobler has kept the project evolving while staying true to that sun drenched, synth forward aesthetic. Beyond his own records, he has remixed tracks for Passion Pit, Foster the People and Charli XCX, and produced the debut album by HAERTS. Live, St. Lucia expands into a full band, with Patricia Beranek on keyboards and percussion alongside a rotating cast of collaborators. Recent activity points to new music surfacing around 2022 and 2023, keeping the project very much alive.
