About
Patrick Hawkins and Stuart Maxwell have been building State of Mind into one of New Zealand's most respected drum and bass acts since 2002, working with labels like Shogun Audio and CIA Recordings before landing exclusively with Dutch imprint Blackout Music. Their 2014 album Eat the Rich marked a serious turning point, pushing into a harder neurofunk sound that earned them international attention and won the UK Drum and Bass Arena Award for best album that year. Five studio albums in, their trajectory has been pretty consistent: technically sharp productions, a knack for memorable singles, and a sound that keeps evolving without losing its edge. Land of the Blind, their fifth record, scored them a New Zealand Music Awards nomination for Best Electronic Artist in 2020 and put them in the finals of the Drum and Bass Arena Awards again, this time up against Chase and Status. Not bad for a duo that started out hosting a drum and bass radio show in Auckland.
