About
Also known as: Stephan McLeod
Swiss bass and conductor Stephan MacLeod has built his career almost entirely around Baroque and early music, performed with the kind of historical rigour that puts him in the company of legends. He spent five years as first bass of the Huelgas Ensemble and contributed as both soloist and choir member to Masaaki Suzuki's landmark complete recording of Bach's cantatas with the Bach Collegium Japan. He has also worked alongside Philippe Herreweghe, Gustav Leonhardt, and Jordi Savall, logging well over 75 CDs along the way. In 2005 MacLeod founded his own Geneva based ensemble Gli Angeli Genève, blending voices and instruments under his direction. Their debut CD landed an Editor's Choice nod from Gramophone, and their 2021 recording of Bach's Mass in B minor drew praise for its swift momentum and crisp articulation. More recently, MacLeod completed a full cycle of Bach's chorale cantatas recorded over several years and released in 2025, a project that speaks to the depth of his commitment to the repertoire.
