About
French baritone Stéphane Degout has built one of the most versatile careers in contemporary classical singing, moving with equal ease between Baroque opera, French mélodie, and the grand stages of the 21st century. He has performed at the Paris Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, and the Glyndebourne Festival, working with conductors like Simon Rattle, Riccardo Muti, René Jacobs, and William Christie. His repertoire is genuinely vast, ranging from Monteverdi's Orfeo to Mozart's Don Giovanni, from Rameau to George Benjamin, and he has taken part in world premieres including Philippe Boesmans's Au monde and Pinocchio as well as Benoît Mernier's La Dispute. Aside from the opera stage, Degout is a committed recitalist, performing French mélodie and German Lied with several regular piano partners across Europe and North America. He recorded the disc Mélodie for Naïve Records, and in 2012 he was named Lyric Artist of the Year at the Victoires de la musique classique, the same year he was appointed chevalier in the ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
