Belgian drummer Stéphane Galland has built a career that moves fluidly between jazz, African rhythms, classical music, and pop, playing with everyone from Joe Zawinul's Syndicate to Zap Mama and Axelle Red. He is a founding member of Aka Moon, the Brussels based jazz collective that grew out of the Nasa Na Band after a formative trip to the forests of Central Africa, and the group has released a sprawling catalogue of albums since the early 1990s. His reputation rests on an almost unnerving command of complex rhythms, handled with a naturalness that other drummers envy. More recently, he contributed to Selah Sue's album Movin' and released an electronic dub record called Songshan with saxophonist Jeroen van Herzeele through Dutch label Challenge Records International.
