About
New York saxophonist and composer Steve Lehman operates at the sharp edge where jazz meets experimental and spectral music, and his records tend to stop critics in their tracks. His 2009 album Travail, Transformation and Flow landed the top spot on The New York Times jazz album of the year list, and Mise en Abime took the best new album prize in the NPR Music Jazz Critics Poll in 2014. That same year he received the Doris Duke Artist Award, followed by a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2015. He holds a doctorate in composition from Columbia University, where he studied under Tristan Murail and George E. Lewis among others. As a performer, Lehman runs several of his own ensembles while also appearing regularly alongside Anthony Braxton, Vijay Iyer, and Jason Moran. His discography as a leader stretches back to 2001 and spans a wide range of collaborations, from a duo record with Craig Taborn to a full project with the Orchestre National de Jazz. He teaches music at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia.
