About
Steve Taylor built his reputation in the 1980s on Christian alternative rock that actually had teeth. His satirical, sardonic lyrics took aim at televangelists, racial policies at institutions like Bob Jones University, and Christian hypocrisy in general, which made him a genuinely unusual presence in a genre not known for rocking the boat. His 1984 album Meltdown even landed a video on MTV, a rare feat for a Christian artist at the time, and he picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Male Gospel Performance the following year. Beyond his solo work, Taylor founded the label Squint Entertainment in 1997, helping launch acts like Sixpence None the Richer and Chevelle, and has long been a go to producer and writer for Newsboys. He also moved into filmmaking, directing Blue Like Jazz among others. After a decade away from performing, he came back as frontman of Steve Taylor and The Perfect Foil, a supergroup he put together with Peter Furler, Jimmy Abegg, and John Mark Painter.
