Stormzy built his reputation on raw grime freestyles, specifically the Wicked Skengman series, before turning that underground buzz into something much bigger. His 2017 debut album Gang Signs and Prayer was a landmark moment, the first grime album to top the UK Albums Chart, and it went on to win British Album of the Year at the Brit Awards. Two years later he made history again as the first Black British rapper to headline Glastonbury, performing in a Union Jack stab vest designed by Banksy as a pointed comment on knife crime in London. His 2019 single Vossi Bop gave him his first solo UK number one, and he followed that up with Own It alongside Ed Sheeran and Burna Boy. The third album This Is What I Mean arrived in November 2022 on Def Jam, preceded by the single Mel Made Me Do It and its sprawling 11 minute video featuring everyone from Usain Bolt to José Mourinho. He keeps expanding what grime can look and sound like, pulling in pop, afroswing and UK drill along the way.
