About
Also known as: Sud Sound Sistem
Sud Sound System brought something genuinely fresh to the Italian music scene by fusing Jamaican dancehall and reggae with the sounds and dialect of Salento, a sun drenched region at the very heel of Italy's boot. They are widely considered pioneers of Italian ragga, weaving the local Salentino dialect into rhythms drawn from Jamaica, and even pulling in moves and influences from traditional Southern Italian dances like pizzica and tarantella. What sets them apart from the rest of the Italian reggae scene is their unflinching focus on Southern Italy itself. Their lyrics dig into the social, political and economic realities of the Mezzogiorno, delivered always in dialect rather than standard Italian. That regional authenticity has earned them fans across the whole country, making them a rare act whose roots actually define their reach.
