About

Sue Foley is one of those rare guitarists who can hold her own in a Texas juke joint and a concert hall in the same week. The Ottawa born blues player built her reputation on the Austin scene after signing with the legendary Antone's Records, where she cut her debut Young Girl Blues and spent years honing a style that mixes electric Texas blues swagger with a genuine acoustic sensibility. Along the way she racked up seventeen Maple Blues Awards, a Juno for her 2001 record Love Comin' Down, and five consecutive Koko Taylor Awards at the Blues Music Awards, plus stage time alongside B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Her 2018 album The Ice Queen, featuring Billy Gibbons and Jimmie Vaughan, showed she still runs in serious company. Then in 2024 she went in a different direction with One Guitar Woman, a solo acoustic tribute to the female pioneers of guitar. That record earned a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album, and Foley has also been writing about those same pioneering women for Guitar Player Magazine and the Cambridge Companion to the Electric Guitar. She holds a PhD in Musicology, and a book called Guitar Women is in the works.
