Sugarcult built their reputation on three chord pop punk with serious hooks, and their 2001 debut Start Static still holds up as one of the sharper records to come out of Santa Barbara. Singles like "Pretty Girl (The Way)", "Bouncing Off the Walls", and "Stuck in America" got real radio traction, with "Stuck in America" winning the Los Angeles Regional Poll at the Independent Music Awards in 2003. The band toured relentlessly, landing a spot on the Warped Tour main stage and supporting both Green Day and Blink 182. Their sound sits somewhere between the melodic punch of the Ramones and the jangly smarts of Elvis Costello, a combination that drew comparisons to Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, and Good Charlotte. 5 Seconds of Summer have named them as a primary influence. After going on hiatus in 2009 and reuniting for occasional shows, the band posted visualizers for several of their classic tracks in 2021, keeping those early anthems in circulation for fans old and new.
