About
Sullivan Fortner has spent well over a decade forging a distinct voice as a pianist, composer and bandleader, with swing and the blues sitting at the absolute core of everything he plays. His trio features Tyrone Allen II on double bass and Kayvon Gordon on drums. The album Leave That In There, his sixth record, draws on memories tied to the history of New Orleans and Louisiana, including the legacy of slavery and resistance on the sugarcane plantations, a thread woven through the track Sugarcane. The title itself references Spike Lee's Hurricane Katrina documentary When the Levees Broke. Musically the record ranges wide, from acoustic trio settings to Hammond organ, marimba, Bàtá drums and synthesizers. Fortner also holds a Grammy for Best Jazz Performance, won alongside Samara Joy, and has performed alongside vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant.
