About
Drummer Joost Lijbaart has spent 35 years building an international career as a drummer, bandleader and sideman, but with Sunflower he strips things back considerably. The trio, completed by bassist River Adomeit and vocalist and guitarist Amelie Spinks, sits squarely in the singer songwriter tradition, with nods to Joni Mitchell, Americana and folk. Lijbaart sets aside much of his technical virtuosity here in favour of simple grooves, a warm open sound, and plenty of room for improvisation. The album Love Letters is the most personal statement Lijbaart has put his name to. Its songs circle around themes of care, closeness and loss. On record the trio is joined by Wolfert Brederode on piano, harmonium and Wurlitzer, and guitarist Tim Langedijk, both of whom flesh out the intimate, unhurried atmosphere that defines the project.
