About
Also known as: Superfunk Inc
Superfunk put Marseille on the electronic dance music map when their 2000 single Lucky Star blew up across France and beyond. The track sampled Chris Rea and featured vocalist Ron Carroll, and it remains the moment most people associate with the group. From there they kept the momentum going with further singles Young MC and Last Dance, all landing on their debut album Hold Up, a set of club focused French house built heavily on samples. Founded in 1998 by Stéphane Bonan, Fabrice Texier and Hamdi Hassen, the group released music on their own Fiat Lux label before linking up with Virgin. They later regrouped as Superfunk Inc with new member Sasha Valmont, putting out singles in 2004 including a cover of Joe Smooth's The Promised Land. Sadly, Stéphane Bonan passed away from cancer in August 2020. The group has continued to release material, and a 2025 collaboration with Ron Carroll suggests the Lucky Star partnership still has some life in it.
