Surgeon, the alias of Birmingham based Anthony Child, has spent three decades carving out a distinctive corner of techno that pulls in equal measure from industrial music, krautrock, and dub. His productions for Tresor, Soma, and his own labels Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension sit somewhere between the dance floor and something far more cinematic. Coil's influence runs especially deep: most of the track titles on his Tresor album Force and Form are direct references to Coil recordings. Beyond music, he draws inspiration from filmmakers and writers like David Lynch and William S. Burroughs, which gives his work an unsettling, almost literary quality. His discography stretches back to a debut EP in 1994 and includes collaborations like British Murder Boys with Regis and Frequency 7 with Ben Sims. He was also among the first DJs to integrate Ableton Live and Final Scratch into live sets, a genuinely forward thinking move at the time. His tenth studio album Shell Wave landed in 2025, showing no signs of him slowing down.
