About
Also known as: Susanna Ulla Marjukka Mälkki
Susanna Mälkki has a knack for being first. The Finnish conductor made history at La Scala in 2011 when she led the world premiere of Luca Francesconi's opera Quartett, becoming the first woman ever to conduct an opera production there. She also became the first female conductor featured in the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD series, when she took the podium for the Met's first production of Kaija Saariaho's L'Amour de loin in 2016. Before conducting became her focus, she was principal cellist of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, a background that clearly informs her feel for texture and ensemble. A specialist in contemporary classical music, Mälkki spent years at the helm of the Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris, a role she held from 2006 to 2013, and she has racked up recordings of works by composers including Bruno Mantovani, Philippe Manoury and Luca Francesconi. She served as chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic from 2016 through the 2022 to 2023 season and now holds the title of chief conductor emeritus. In 2025 she takes up a professorship in orchestral conducting at the Sibelius Academy, again as the first woman named to the post.
