Few metal bands carry the weight of personal loss as openly as Swallow the Sun. Founded in Jyväskylä, Finland in 2000 by guitarist Juha Raivio, the band has built a catalogue around death doom that leans hard into melody and atmosphere, occasionally pulling in gothic and black metal textures. Their second album, Ghosts of Loss, cracked the Finnish singles chart, landing their track "Forgive Her..." at number four in its first week, sandwiched on the album chart between Gwen Stefani and System of a Down. The band's most emotionally raw work came after Raivio lost his partner Aleah Stanbridge in 2016. The standalone single "Lumina Aurea", featuring Wardruna's Einar Selvik, and then the full album When a Shadow Is Forced into the Light both emerged from that grief directly. Their 2015 release Songs from the North I, II and III remains a landmark move, a triple album where each disc explores a distinct mood: gloom, beauty, and despair. Nine studio albums in, Swallow the Sun keep making doom that genuinely means something.
