About
Named after a Curtis Mayfield track, Sweet Exorcist were a Sheffield duo made up of Richard H. Kirk of Cabaret Voltaire fame and Richard Barratt, better known as DJ Parrot. Their 1990 debut "Testone" on Warp Records became a defining moment for bleep techno, built around studio test tones and playfully sampled sounds lifted from Yellow Magic Orchestra and the Close Encounters of the Third Kind soundtrack. The follow up "Clonk" kept the momentum going, and both singles spawned remix versions that showed just how much mileage was in the format. In 1991 the duo released their album C.C.C.D., which holds the distinction of being the very first album put out by Warp Records. A second album, Spirit Guide to Low Tech, arrived on Touch Records in 1994, taking things in a more experimental direction. Warp revisited the legacy with the 2011 compilation RetroActivity, gathering remixes and key tracks into one place for anyone who missed the original run.
