About
Swell Maps were a Birmingham band who spent years as a ramshackle home project before turning into one of the most quietly influential acts of the post punk era. Their debut album A Trip to Marineville mixed furious punk noise with ambient instrumentals and odd experimental interludes, and they took cues from T. Rex as much as from German krautrock groups like Can and Faust. The single "Read About Seymour" made it onto a Guardian list of classic punk singles. The band split in 1980 after just two studio albums, but their reputation kept growing. Pavement, Nirvana, R.E.M., Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore have all name checked them. Members stayed busy afterwards, from Nikki Sudden's solo career to Epic Soundtracks joining Crime and the City Solution. In 2021 Jowe Head started Swell Maps C21, playing material from all six original members, and that project has now produced a new album, C21.
