Symfonieorkest Nijmegen puts together programmes that dig into a theme rather than just stringing together popular pieces. One of their concerts centres on American music as an act of rebellion, pairing works that challenge, question and celebrate what American culture actually means. The programme moves from Jennifer Higdon's deeply personal Blue Cathedral, written after the death of her brother and built around a flute and clarinet dialogue, to the premieres of work by Brendon Randall Myers and cellist Annie Blythe. Florence Price's Juba Dance connects classical form to Afro American roots, while Bernstein's Divertimento for Orchestra mixes jazz, dance and fanfare across eight contrasting movements. Gershwin's An American in Paris rounds things out with its vivid portrait of city life.
