About
Also known as: City of Espoo Chamber Orchestra, Espoon kaupunginorkesteri
Based out of Espoo, a suburb just outside Helsinki, the Tapiola Sinfonietta has been one of Finland's most distinctive chamber orchestras since its founding in 1987 under the name City of Espoo Chamber Orchestra. It picked up its current name in 1991 and has since built a reputation across a broad classical repertoire, stretching from Mozart to Schnittke. The ensemble counts 41 members and performs at home in the 776 seat Tapiola Hall inside the Espoo Cultural Centre. Since 2006, the orchestra has operated without a chief conductor, instead running things through a three person leadership of an intendant and two members elected from within the ranks. Before that shift, the podium was held by some notable names, including Osmo Vänskä and Jean Jacques Kantorow, who led the orchestra from 1993 to 2006 and was later named honorary conductor in 2011. The Sinfonietta has recorded for BIS, Ondine, and CPO, and it has collaborated with artists such as violinist Pekka Kuusisto.
