About
One of the oldest heavy metal acts in Finland, Tarot spent years as a beloved underground band before the wider world caught on. Formed in Kuopio in the early 1980s by brothers Marko and Zachary Hietala, they made their mark fast: the single "Wings of Darkness" and the debut album Spell of Iron both landed in 1986 and became touchstones of Finnish metal. Things shifted dramatically when vocalist and bassist Marko Hietala joined Nightwish in 2001, bringing Tarot a global fanbase that had never heard of them before. That momentum pushed the band to a Finnish chart number one with the 2006 single "You", a first in their career. They kept releasing records through 2010's Gravity of Light and even revisited their roots with a 25th anniversary re recording of Spell of Iron in 2011. The death of longtime drummer Pecu Cinnari in 2016 put the band on hold, but they have since reunited and played Tuska Festival in 2024.
