About
Ted Hearne writes music that refuses to sit still. The Chicago born composer, singer, and conductor has built a reputation for politically charged, stylistically restless work that pulls from contemporary classical, noise, hip hop, and everything in between. His oratorio trilogy is the centerpiece of his output: "Katrina Ballads" tackled the media circus around Hurricane Katrina, "The Source" set leaked military documents as text to explore the Chelsea Manning case, and "Place," made with poet Saul Williams and director Patricia McGregor, landed Grammy nominations when it was released in 2020. He has been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony, and his music has been heard at Carnegie Hall and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. As a performer, Hearne is just as hard to pin down. He sings in his own works with a technique that mixes screaming, rapping, falsetto, and crooning in rapid succession, something Time Out Chicago memorably called "vocal hellion" energy. He has collaborated with Erykah Badu, noise musician Philip White, and composer J.G. Thirlwell, and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in both 2018 and 2021. He currently teaches composition at the USC Thornton School of Music.
