Tego Calderón made reggaeton history when his debut album El Abayarde sold 300,000 copies worldwide and became the first hip hop and reggaeton solo album to move over 75,000 units in a single week without major label distribution. That kind of momentum earned him a Latin Grammy nomination and a sold out show at Madison Square Garden with 20,000 fans in attendance. The New York Times called him a forward looking performer who made the best case for reggaeton as music with room to grow. What sets him apart from most of his peers is his range. His lyrics take on corruption in the Puerto Rican government alongside themes of love, dancing and self reflection, and his sound pulls from salsa, plena, dancehall and hip hop. His 2015 album El Que Sabe, Sabe pushed further into that eclecticism and won him a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music Album. He has also built a solid side career as an actor, appearing in the Fast and Furious franchise alongside Don Omar.
