About
Few guitarists blur the line between jazz, rock, and contemporary classical music quite like Terje Rypdal. The Oslo born guitarist built his reputation largely through ECM Records, where he released a long string of albums spanning jazz fusion, atmospheric improvisation, and orchestral composition, sometimes without his guitar featuring at all. He started out playing Hank Marvin influenced rock with The Vanguards before pivoting to jazz in 1968, falling in with Jan Garbarek and George Russell, and making a real splash at the free jazz festival in Baden Baden in 1969 as part of a band led by Lester Bowie. His reach extended well beyond the jazz world when Michael Mann used his compositions "Last Nite" and "Mystery Man" on the soundtrack to the film Heat. He has also performed alongside fellow guitarists Ronni Le Tekrø and Mads Eriksen as the trio N3.
