About
Terrence Dixon is one of Detroit's quietest and most consistent figures in minimal techno. Operating mostly under his own name and the alias Population One, he has been building a deeply personal, stripped back sound since the early 90s, drawing on an eclectic mix of influences that runs from Teddy Pendergrass and The O'Jays through to Jimi Hendrix and Mantronix. His tool of choice is the Roland MC 303 groovebox, which gives his music a raw, immediate quality that fits the Detroit tradition without being a copy of it. His debut album From The Far Future, released on Tresor in 2000, remains a touchstone, framing classic techno as something worth preserving and reinventing at the same time. He has released on Metroplex, worked on Juan Atkins' Skynet album, and in 2013 launched his own Reduction label to keep things on his own terms. He announced retirement in 2014, then kept releasing music anyway, which feels very on brand for someone who has never been much for grand statements.
