Thandi Ntuli's music operates somewhere between South African jazz and something far more atmospheric. Her 2023 collaborative album Rainbow Revisited, made with American composer and producer Carlos Niño, strips things right back: mostly piano, her voice, and a quiet intensity recorded over just two days in Venice Beach, California. Critics at Pitchfork pointed to her gift for gospel melodies that feel like a Mzansi jazz birthright, while The Guardian called it a masterclass in the eloquent potential of the solo. Mojo described it as a brave release that lays her talent bare. Rainbow Revisited earned near universal acclaim, with Metacritic scoring it 83 out of 100, and it marks what The Guardian called her new frontier of South African jazz, minimal in arrangement but quietly expansive in everything it says.
