About
Also known as: Thee Angels Ov Light
After shutting down Swans, the band he founded in 1982, Michael Gira picked up an acoustic guitar and started over with Angels of Light. The sound he chose was a world away from the brutality of his old group: more melodic, built around acoustic instruments, and leaning on folk and country. Before settling on the name, he had planned to call the project the Pleasure Seekers, but dropped it because a 1960s group already used it. The lineup kept shifting and pulled in a long list of players, including Kid Congo Powers of the Cramps, Bliss Blood of the Moonlighters, Devendra Banhart and Dana Schechter of Bee and Flower. Brooklyn band Akron/Family backed Gira on The Angels of Light Sing 'Other People' and We Are Him, and the two acts also shared a split album. All the records came out on his own label, Young God Records, from New Mother in 1999 through to We Are Him in 2007. Several members, among them Kristof Hahn, Thor Harris and Phil Puleo, later joined the new Swans lineup in 2010.
