Few bands operate quite like The Armed. The Detroit collective keeps its actual membership deliberately obscure, describing itself without irony as 'the world's greatest band' and leaning into a cult like mystique built around the mantra 'refract'. What is clear is the music: a dense, shape shifting blend of hardcore punk, noise rock and post hardcore that pulls in an impressive list of collaborators, from Converge's Kurt Ballou, who has produced most of their records, to Ben Koller on drums for Only Love, who later revealed he was essentially tricked into playing on it. Their 2021 album Ultrapop earned universal acclaim on Metacritic, with Pitchfork and Paste both scoring it highly. They followed that with Perfect Saviors in 2023, a record featuring contributions from Iggy Pop, Julien Baker, Josh Klinghoffer and members of Jane's Addiction. The Armed also snuck a track into the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack under the alias Homeschool Dropouts, which feels very on brand.
