About

Also known as: (Ataris), Ataris, The*Ataris

The Ataris built their reputation the hard way, grinding through the underground punk scene with relentless touring and a DIY spirit before landing on a major label. The Anderson, Indiana band, kept afloat through countless lineup changes by singer and guitarist Kris Roe, found their biggest moment with So Long, Astoria in 2003. That record, produced by Lou Giordano, traded their raw, quick tracked earlier sound for something more polished and closer to Jimmy Eat World territory, and it worked. The album went gold. Their cover of Don Henley's 'The Boys of Summer' became something of an accidental hit after LA radio station KROQ picked it up uninvited, reaching number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 despite the band having already chosen a different single. 'In This Diary' from the same record has since been called one of the best pop punk songs ever written. Roe remains the one constant in a band that has shuffled members throughout its entire run.
