About
Few bands in New Zealand's alternative rock history have held it together as long as The Bats. Formed in Christchurch in 1982 with a lineup that has never changed, Robert Scott, Kaye Woodward, Paul Kean and Malcolm Grant have spent four decades making jangly, melodic guitar pop that sits comfortably alongside the Dunedin Sound even though Christchurch is their home turf. Their 1987 debut Daddy's Highway is still considered one of the finest New Zealand albums of the 1980s, with tracks like "North By North" and "Block of Wood" becoming fixtures on student radio. The band's reach extended well beyond the Pacific: their single "Made Up in Blue" was named Single of the Week by NME, and Fear of God spent three months on the French top 50. After a decade long break from albums, The Bats came back sharper than ever. Free All the Monsters (2011), their eighth record, earned a glowing write up from Pitchfork, which called it possibly their best ever. That kind of staying power is rare, and Robert Scott has a straightforward explanation: taking breaks keeps it fun.
