About

Also known as: Brand New Heavies

The Brand New Heavies took their name from a James Brown nickname, "Minister of New Super Heavy Funk", after supporting the Godfather of Soul at Wembley Arena in 1987. That tells you a lot about the sound. Formed in 1985 as Brother International by Simon Bartholomew, Andrew Levy and Jan Kincaid, the Ealing band became one of the leading names in acid jazz, a genre they helped invent. The big turn came when American singer N'Dea Davenport joined and the self titled debut was re recorded with her vocals. Brother Sister hit number four on the UK albums chart in 1994 and went platinum, with "Dream On Dreamer" crossing over internationally. Shelter did the same in 1997. A rotating cast of vocalists followed, including Siedah Garrett and Carleen Anderson, and Davenport has come back more than once. They've sold over 2.5 million records worldwide, and TBNH arrived in 2019.
