About
Also known as: Chiffons, The Chiftons
The Chiffons are probably best known for a song that ended up in a courtroom. Their first single, "He's So Fine", went to No. 1 in the US and sold over a million copies, and when George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" came out in 1970, the estate of songwriter Ronnie Mack sued over the similarities. A judge ruled Harrison had copied it unintentionally, and the group later recorded their own version of "My Sweet Lord" in 1975. This Bronx girl group followed that debut with "One Fine Day", written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, plus "Sweet Talkin' Guy" and "I Have a Boyfriend". Sylvia Peterson took on more lead vocals as the decade went on, singing on tracks like "Why Am I So Shy" and "My Block". They toured the UK and Germany in 1967, opening a London club date for Jimi Hendrix with Beatles and Rolling Stones members in the crowd. "Just for Tonight" was a big hit in Canada in 1968.
