About

Also known as: Cinematic Orchestra, J Swinscoe presents The Cinematic Orchestra, The Cinematic Orcestra

Few acts blur the line between jazz and electronic music as naturally as The Cinematic Orchestra. Formed in London in 1999 by Jason Swinscoe and signed to Ninja Tune, the group built their sound around live jazz improvisation layered with turntablism and electronic production, often to the point where you genuinely cannot tell where the live playing stops and the studio trickery begins. Their debut Motion set the tone, earning enough critical heat to land them a performance at the Director's Guild Awards ceremony honouring Stanley Kubrick. Over the years they have scored a Disneynature film, written a brand new live score for Dziga Vertov's 1929 silent classic Man with a Movie Camera, and released four studio albums, the most recent being To Believe in 2019. Their track "To Build a Home", featuring Canadian singer Patrick Watson, has turned up in films, TV dramas, a Guinness ad, and a viral Neil deGrasse Tyson video that racked up over nine million YouTube views. That kind of reach says a lot about how well their music travels.
